Mega Gengar ex: Every Version, the Ability and How It Works
Updated 2026-11-02
Mega Gengar ex is a Darkness-type Stage 2 Pokémon ex with 350 HP and the Ability Shadowy Concealment. It appears in Phantasmal Flames as number 56, in Ascended Heroes as 125, 269 and 284, and as MEP promo 73. This guide explains each version and what the Ability does.
What is Mega Gengar ex?
Mega Gengar ex is a Darkness-type Stage 2 Pokémon ex card with 350 HP that evolves from Haunter and is printed in English in Mega Evolution—Phantasmal Flames.
The Pokémon Company named it a headliner of that expansion, released on 14 November 2025, together with Mega Charizard X ex. The launch notice describes both as Mega Evolution Pokémon ex with more HP and attack damage than regular Pokémon ex.
The TCGdex card database lists the rest of the profile. It has an Ability called Shadowy Concealment and one attack, Void Gale, which costs two Darkness Energy and does 230 damage. Its weakness is Fighting ×2, no resistance is listed, the retreat cost is 2 and the regulation mark is I. Limitless gives the same figures for the Phantasmal Flames card.
How many Mega Gengar ex cards are there?
TCGdex lists five English Mega Gengar ex cards: number 56 in Phantasmal Flames, numbers 125, 269 and 284 in Ascended Heroes, and number 73 in the MEP Black Star Promos.
All five print the same Ability, the same attack and the same 350 HP. What differs is the set, the number, the rarity and the artwork, so a seller or a price list that gives only the name does not tell you which card it means.
Limitless also lists three Japanese-language printings, with a different numbering: number 3 in the MEGA Starter Set and numbers 230 and 240 in MEGA Dream ex, set code M2a. They are separate cards from the English five and are not counted in the table.
Ascended Heroes is the larger of the two sets that hold the card. The official press site dates it to 30 January 2026, and TCGdex counts 217 main-set cards and 295 numbered cards in all, so number 125 sits inside the main numbering while 269 and 284 sit above it.
| Number | Set | Rarity | Illustrator (TCGdex) | Main-set card? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 56 | Phantasmal Flames | Double Rare | 5ban Graphics | Yes, within 1 to 94 |
| 125 | Ascended Heroes | Double Rare | 5ban Graphics | Yes, within 1 to 217 |
| 269 | Ascended Heroes | Mega Attack Rare | Taiga Kasai | No, above 217 |
| 284 | Ascended Heroes | Special Illustration Rare | danciao | No, above 217 |
| 73 | MEP Black Star Promos | Promo | Ultimateinudog | No, a separate promo list |
What does Shadowy Concealment do?
Shadowy Concealment makes your opponent take one fewer Prize card when one of your Darkness Pokémon is Knocked Out by damage from an attack of their Pokémon ex.
TCGdex gives the Ability text in full: if 1 of your Darkness Pokémon is Knocked Out by damage from an attack from your opponent's Pokémon ex, that player takes 1 fewer Prize card, and the effect of Shadowy Concealment does not stack. Limitless shows the same wording on the Phantasmal Flames card.
Each part of the sentence limits it. The Knocked Out Pokémon must be Darkness, the damage must come from an attack, and the attacker must be a Pokémon ex. A Knock Out from a Pokémon that is not an ex, or from something other than attack damage, takes no Prize reduction.
Because the wording says one of your Darkness Pokémon, it also covers Mega Gengar ex itself, which is Darkness. The official Phantasmal Flames page says a Knocked Out Mega Evolution Pokémon ex gives your opponent three Prize cards, so reading that rule with the Ability gives the result below. The Pokémon TCG rules team confirmed in the Phantasmal Flames FAQ (13 November 2025) that the Knock Out itself triggers the Ability, so it applies even to the only Mega Gengar ex in play: an opposing Pokémon ex that Knocks it Out with attack damage takes two Prize cards. The Ability does not stack with a second copy.
How does Mega Gengar ex work in a game?
Mega Gengar ex is a Stage 2 that you play by evolving Haunter, and its attack Void Gale deals 230 damage for two Darkness Energy.
Void Gale also moves one Energy from Mega Gengar ex to one of your Benched Pokémon, according to the TCGdex text. So the attack shifts an Energy onto another Pokémon of yours instead of discarding it.
The rule box matters as much as the attack. The official page says that when these Pokémon are Knocked Out, the opponent claims three Prize cards, and the Serebii card page for the Ascended Heroes version prints the same rule in the card's own words. Shadowy Concealment partly offsets that three-Prize rule when the attacker is a Pokémon ex.
The 350 HP, the Fighting ×2 weakness and the retreat cost of 2 complete the picture. A Fighting-type attacker does double damage, and a retreat cost of 2 makes it expensive to move out of the Active spot.
| Detail | What TCGdex lists |

| Type and stage | Darkness, Stage 2, evolves from Haunter |
| HP | 350 |
| Ability | Shadowy Concealment: 1 fewer Prize card taken when your Darkness Pokémon is Knocked Out by an opposing Pokémon ex's attack damage |
| Attack | Void Gale (2 Darkness Energy): 230 damage, then move an Energy to a Benched Pokémon |
| Weakness and resistance | Fighting ×2, no resistance listed |
| Retreat cost and mark | 2, regulation mark I |
| Worked example | An opposing Pokémon ex Knocks Out Mega Gengar ex with an attack: 2 Prize cards |
How can you tell the Mega Gengar ex versions apart?
Read the set name and the collector number together: 56 is Phantasmal Flames, 125, 269 and 284 are Ascended Heroes, and 73 is the MEP promo list.
The fraction beside the number narrows it down. Phantasmal Flames prints a total of 94 and Ascended Heroes prints 217, and Serebii shows number 269 as 269 over 217. A number above the printed total, such as 269 or 284, marks a secret-numbered card. The two Double Rares, 56 and 125, share an illustrator, 5ban Graphics in TCGdex, so the set symbol and code printed on the card (PFL or ASC) and the number separate them.
The rarity label comes next. TCGdex files 56 and 125 as Double Rare and 284 as Special Illustration Rare. For number 269, the Pokémon.com listing for the card gives the rarity as Mega Attack Rare, while TCGdex and Limitless file the same card as Ultra Rare, so expect either label on a listing.
Finally check the illustrator: Taiga Kasai for 269, danciao for 284 and Ultimateinudog for promo 73. TCGdex lists every version as holo, so the surface does not separate them, and the number, rarity and artist do.
What is the Mega Attack Rare at number 269?
The Mega Attack Rare is a rarity introduced with Ascended Heroes, and Mega Gengar ex numbered 269 is listed with it in the Pokémon.com card database.
The official Ascended Heroes pages describe it as a new rarity that shows Mega Evolution Pokémon ex in bright colours, with attack names written in Japanese katakana as part of the illustration. The overview page shows Mega Gengar ex among its featured cards.
TCGdex and Limitless file number 269 under Ultra Rare, which is why the same card can carry two names in different places. Number 284, by contrast, is a Special Illustration Rare, and the Pokémon.com listing shows the same 350 HP, Ability and attack as the other versions.
What is the Mega Battle Deck with Mega Gengar ex?
The Mega Battle Deck—Mega Gengar ex is a ready-to-play deck built around the card, and PokéGuardian reported its launch date as 24 October 2025.
Pokémon.com lists the contents as one 60-card deck, a set of damage counters, a large metallic coin, a deck box, a double-sided playmat with a strategy sheet and a code card for playing the deck online. A second deck in the same line is built around Mega Diancie ex.
PokéGuardian reported at the reveal that the two decks originate from the Japanese MEGA Starter Set and that each contains 2 ex cards. Neither the product page nor that report gives the collector number of the Mega Gengar ex inside the deck, so this guide does not assign it one of the five numbers in the table.
How does Mega Gengar ex differ from other Gengar cards?
Mega Gengar ex has 350 HP and is Darkness-type, while the older M Gengar EX was Psychic-type and other Gengar ex cards have less HP.
The table compares it with other Gengar cards in TCGdex. The older M Gengar EX in Phantom Forces is a Psychic-type card with 220 HP and the attack Phantom Gate, which copies one of your opponent's attacks. The Gengar ex in Temporal Forces has 310 HP and an Ability that puts damage counters on the opponent's Pokémon.
The naming is the usual trap. Searching Gengar ex returns several different cards, and the name Mega Gengar ex, the 350 HP and Shadowy Concealment identify the cards in this guide.
| Card | Set and number | Type and HP | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mega Gengar ex | Phantasmal Flames 56 and others above | Darkness, 350 HP | Shadowy Concealment; Void Gale for 230 |
| Gengar EX | Phantom Forces 34 and 114 | Psychic, 170 HP | Night Attack puts 3 damage counters on one opposing Pokémon |
| M Gengar EX | Phantom Forces 35 and 121 | Psychic, 220 HP | Phantom Gate uses one of your opponent's attacks |
| Gengar VMAX | Fusion Strike 157 and 271 | Darkness, 320 HP | Fear and Panic 60× and G-Max Swallow Up for 250 |
| Gengar ex | Temporal Forces 104 and 193 | Darkness, 310 HP | Gnawing Curse; Tricky Steps for 160 |
| Gengar ex | 30th Celebration 90 and 154 | Darkness, 280 HP, Basic | Fainting Spell; Chaotic Pain places 13 damage counters |
Is Mega Gengar ex in the UnpackCard store?
This guide does not say that Mega Gengar ex is in the store's pool; it is a reference for the card itself.
UnpackCard lets you open packs of real cards online in its store, linked at the top of this page. The store's packs are not Phantasmal Flames booster packs: each draws one card from a mixed pool of graded and raw cards, and the pool and odds for every pack are on the Pricing and Odds page. Because this is a demo site, you should know the current status: Demo: no real payments, nothing ships yet.
TCGdex lists no other Mega Gengar ex in Phantasmal Flames, and our Phantasmal Flames best cards guide goes through the whole set. To check a card you have found, the official Pokémon TCG site for Malaysia at asia.pokemon-card.com/my has a card search, a store map and an events section.
