Mega Charizard X ex: Versions, Numbers and How to Tell Them Apart

Updated 2026-11-01

Mega Charizard X ex is a Fire-type Stage 2 Pokémon ex with 360 HP, listed in six English versions: four in Phantasmal Flames, numbered 13, 109, 125 and 130, and two Black Star Promos, numbered 23 and 29. This guide separates them by number, rarity and illustrator.

What is Mega Charizard X ex?

Mega Charizard X ex is a Fire-type Stage 2 Pokémon ex card with 360 HP, introduced in the Mega Evolution—Phantasmal Flames expansion on 14 November 2025.

The official Phantasmal Flames overview puts four Mega Evolution Pokémon ex up front: Mega Charizard X ex, Mega Heracross ex, Mega Gengar ex and Mega Lopunny ex.

The TCGdex card database gives the rest of the profile. It evolves from Charmeleon, has one attack called Inferno X that costs two Fire Energy, a Water weakness of ×2, a retreat cost of 2 and the regulation mark I. Inferno X lets you discard any amount of Fire Energy from among your Pokémon, and it does 90 damage for each card you discarded, so the damage depends on how many Fire Energy you choose to discard.

TCGdex lists the same card text, the same 360 HP and the same attack on every version. What changes from one version to the next is the rarity, the collector number, the artwork and the set, which is why one name can stand for six different cards in a binder.

How many Mega Charizard X ex cards are there?

TCGdex lists six English Mega Charizard X ex cards: four in Phantasmal Flames, numbered 13, 109, 125 and 130, and two MEP Black Star Promos, numbered 23 and 29.

Phantasmal Flames has 94 main-set cards and 130 numbered cards in all, according to TCGdex. Number 13 therefore sits inside the main numbering, while 109, 125 and 130 are among the 36 secret-numbered cards above 94.

The table lists every one of the six with the rarity and illustrator that TCGdex records. Japanese-language printings use their own set codes and numbers, and digital copies are separate again, so neither is counted here. The official launch notice does say that players of the Pokémon TCG Live app received a deck featuring Mega Charizard X ex after unlocking the Battle Pass.

How can you tell the Mega Charizard X ex versions apart?

Read the collector number first: 13, 109, 125 and 130 are Phantasmal Flames cards, while 23 and 29 come from the MEP promo list.

Next, look at the set total printed beside the number. The Serebii card page for the Special Illustration Rare shows 125 over 94, and the same logic applies to 109 and 130: any Phantasmal Flames number above the printed total of 94 is a secret-numbered card. Number 13 sits below 94, so it is a main-set card.

Then read the rarity label. TCGdex files number 13 as a Double Rare, number 109 as an Ultra Rare, number 125 as a Special Illustration Rare and number 130 as a Mega Hyper Rare. The two promos carry the Promo label instead, because the MEP set is a separate Black Star list with no main-set total in the TCGdex record.

The illustrator credit is a useful second check. TCGdex credits danciao for number 125 and Saboteri for promo 23, while takuyoa is credited on 13, 109, 130 and promo 29. Two cards with the same artist are separated by number.

TCGdex gives all six versions the same holo flag, so that flag does not separate them, and none of the sources I checked describes the finish of each rarity tier. Number, rarity label and artist are the three checks that work, in that order, and a photo of the number you expect is the quickest final comparison.

Choosing between them depends on what you want. A player can use whichever version they prefer, because TCGdex prints identical card text on all six, and number 13, the Double Rare, matches the rarer versions word for word. A collector who likes painted scenes can look for the Special Illustration Rare at 125, credited to danciao, while someone after the top of the numbering will look for number 130, the Mega Hyper Rare, which is the last number in the set.

A completionist has a clear target: six cards in English, four from one set and two from the promo list. Write the six numbers on a checklist before you start, because a seller who lists just the name Mega Charizard X ex may be describing any of them. Ask for the number every time.

What does Mega Evolution ex mean in the Pokémon TCG?

A Mega Evolution Pokémon ex keeps the stage of the Pokémon it is based on, so the Mega label does not set the stage.

TCGdex records Mega Charizard X ex as a Stage 2 that evolves from Charmeleon, Mega Clefable ex (MEP promo 72) as a Stage 1 from Clefairy, and Mega Diancie ex (Phantasmal Flames 41) as a Basic. When Mega Charizard X ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes three Prize cards.

The Prize rule comes from the official Phantasmal Flames page, which says that when these Pokémon are Knocked Out, the opponent claims three Prize cards. The rule box on the Serebii card page for number 125 says the same in the card's own words.

One more official detail concerns the artwork. The launch notice says some Ultra Rare cards in the expansion sometimes show silhouettes of the Pokémon's original form in the artwork. It does not say which cards, so check the card in your hands before you rely on it.

How does Mega Charizard X ex differ from Mega Charizard Y ex?

Both cards have 360 HP, the Fire type and a Charmeleon evolution line, but they differ in attack, retreat cost, set and regulation mark.

The attacks show the clearest split. Inferno X scales with the Fire Energy you choose to discard, at 90 damage each. Explosion Y discards 3 Energy from the Pokémon itself and deals 280 damage to one of your opponent's Pokémon, and the card text adds that Weakness and Resistance are not applied to Benched Pokémon.

Mega Charizard Y ex belongs to Mega Evolution—Ascended Heroes, which the official press site dates to 30 January 2026. TCGdex lists it at number 22 as a Double Rare and number 294 as a Mega Hyper Rare, plus MEP promo 30. TCGdex lists no Mega Charizard X ex in Ascended Heroes, so a search for the X card does not need to look there.

Mega Charizard X ex for collectors in Malaysia

Collectors in Malaysia can check card details, stores and events on the official Pokémon Trading Card Game site for Malaysia, at asia.pokemon-card.com/my.

The site offers a card search with filters, a store map, an events section that includes Pokémon Game On! and pre-release events, and pages for deck building and rules. Use its card search together with the number table above when you want to confirm a card you have found.

UnpackCard runs an online store, linked at the top of this page, where people open packs of real cards. The store's packs are not Phantasmal Flames booster packs: each draws one card from a mixed pool of graded and raw cards, and the pool and odds for every pack are on the Pricing and Odds page. Because this is a demo site, you should know the current status: Demo: no real payments, nothing ships yet.
