Does Pokémon TCG Pocket use real cards?
Updated 2026-10-17
No. Pokémon TCG Pocket is a mobile app for iOS and Android, and every card in it is digital. Opening packs in the app does not give you physical cards, and the app cards cannot be turned into real ones. Physical cards come from the separate Pokémon Trading Card Game.
The short answer
Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket is an app published by The Pokémon Company, made by Creatures Inc. and DeNA, and released on 30 October 2024. It runs on iOS and Android. The Pokémon Company describes its cards as digital cards, including some with artwork from the past and some that exist only in the app.
That means the packs you open in the app are not connected to a physical product. Nothing is posted to you, and there is no way to convert an app collection into physical cards. The cards you hold in the app are records inside the game, and the game decides what you can do with them.
The app is free to download, and the Pokémon Company says players can open two booster packs every day at no cost. Decks in the app have 20 cards and use streamlined rules, compared with the 60-card decks of the physical game.
Four things people mean by opening Pokémon packs
Searches like this one usually mix up four different things. The table lays them out side by side so you can see which one you are dealing with.
The comparison is general. Individual apps and shops differ, so always read what a particular service says about whether you receive physical cards.
| TCG Pocket | Physical Pokémon TCG | Pack simulators | Real-card online pack opening | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What the cards are | Digital cards inside one app | Printed cards you hold | Digital images, often fan-made | Real printed cards |
| Do you receive physical cards? | No | Yes | No | Yes, if the service sends them |
| Cost to try | Free to download, with free daily packs | You pay for each pack or box | Usually free | Paid, set by each service |
| Who runs it | The Pokémon Company | The Pokémon Company, sold by shops | Fans and third parties | Independent shops and sites |
| Can you play with the cards? | In the app only | At home, at events and in leagues | No | Yes, once you have them |
| Can you resell the cards? | No, they stay in the app | Yes, as physical cards | No | Yes, after you receive them |
Free simulators vs sites that open real cards
A free pack simulator is a toy. It shows random cards on screen, usually from a list of set contents, and then the session ends. You keep nothing. Many simulators are fan projects and are not run by the Pokémon Company.
A real-card online pack opening service works differently. A shop holds physical packs or cards, you choose or open one on screen, and the card you reveal is a real item the shop then sends to you. Because real money and real stock are involved, you should check the shop's terms, its returns policy, the odds it publishes and whether it gives postal details before you pay.
Questions worth asking any such service: Who is the seller? Are the cards genuine and in what condition? What happens if a card is out of stock? Is the delivery cost shown before payment? A shop that cannot answer these clearly is not worth trusting.
Which one should you use?
If you want to learn the game or enjoy collecting for free on your phone, TCG Pocket is made for that and costs nothing to start. If you want cards you can hold, sleeve, trade with friends or take to a local tournament, you need the physical Pokémon TCG, bought from a shop or opened through a service that sends real cards.
Do not expect any link between the two. A rare card in Pocket does not make the same card exist in your hands.
